How things would look like in lower dimensions

I'm sure you already know this but I'll say it anyway. We live in a 3-dimensional spaced world (+ 1 temporal dimension). Or at least that's about as many dimensions we are able to comprehend despite what the reality might be (string theory proposes a 10-dimensional world and M-theory suggests an 11-dimensional world). If you're a normal human being with functional eyes, you already know how things look like in 3 dimensions. Unless you're a Kryptonian with x-ray vision, or where infrared goggles like all the time, or blind (which would be weird considering you're reading my post 😶), your normal everyday vision would be in 3 dimensions. You see things with respect to the three axes. But have you ever wondered how things would look like if life isn't 3D?

(Fig 1: The three axes)

How things would look like in 2D:

We'll use simple and basic shapes for demonstration purposes (shown in uncaptioned images below). So the pink ball is a 3D sphere and the blue rectangle is a 2D piece of paper. Images on the left show the movement of the pink sphere as it enters into the 2D paper and eventually leave. Images on the right demonstrate its presence 'in' the 2D paper. Notice how as it enters the "2D world" of the blue paper, it appears as a small pink circle. Then, as it progresses further into the paper, the circle expands as its diameter gets bigger. After reaching halfway through (passing through maximum diameter), the circle gets smaller as its diameter decreases, then simply disappear.

Now imagine if you were living in that 2D paper. You would see the circle appear out of thin air, get bigger and then disappear 🙊. Same rules apply if say a 2D object would enter into 1D. You'd see it appear as a dot, then a line, then change shape or length (depending on the object), and finally disappear. You'd probably think that it was magic or alien invasions 👽🛸 (this would totally be me), when it was in fact science.

So the next time something magically appears out of nowhere, chances are you're having visitors from higher dimensions (totally possible in my opinion 🙄). Tell them I said hi! 😉
